Meet the Heart behind Rosa & Friends

Meet the star of the show, Rosa.

Rosa was born with a chromosome abnormality and was diagnosed with a profound intellectual disability, as well as legal blindness.

I knew very early on that there were going to be insurmountable challenges. The hours, days, and years after she was born were hard - there’s no other way to say it. In the beginning, doctors were unsure if Rosa would survive, but three weeks later, we were traveling to Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia for the first surgery of many. I'm very thankful that the surgeries relieved the pressure and pain Rosa was experiencing, but she wouldn’t be able to develop like other children.

The years that followed were filled with so many questions and few answers.

As Rosa’s mother,  I worried that I could not meet all her needs.

I am grateful that Disability benefits offer some assistance, but there always seemed to be some deficiencies.

Even now, I run out of the allotted number of diapers and bed pads every month.

Rosa and I routinely travel to Gainesville, Florida for her various medical appointments, which require extra expenses for gas, food, and sometimes hotels.

Rosa requires 24-hour care, and although some respite service hours are provided, I’m limited to the number of hours I can work while managing the other everyday obligations in life.

It’s been challenging and at times I wanted to give up, but how could I when she consistently brings me, and others, so much happiness?

Rosa is now 31 years old.

The only word she’s ever spoken is, “No,” and she uses it liberally.

She loves to listen and clap along to the music.

She also loves to laugh and dance together daily.

She is my sidekick at the beach or the gym, and she loves French fries!

She is the reason Rosa & Friends now exists.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for caretakers and their loved ones, so they never have to contemplate giving up, like I once did.
